About SBGAL

Santa Barbara Girlfriends Adventure League (SBGAL) is all about Training, Treks, & Travel for busy women that want to have a good fitness-focused time!

Training programs progress over the course of a typical 10-12 session to prepare for a travel adventure (see below). The training programs are designed for apparently healthy women ages 18-80. SBGAL supplements trainings with a variety of information for consideration on proper hiking/walking technique and equipment/ supplies, women’s wellness subjects, nature and history topics, and information on our travel adventure destination.

Treks are the heart of the SBGAL training program and take place all over Santa Barbara and its surrounding region. Our hiking programs focus on front country trails of the Santa Ynez Mountains, and we also explore nearby hiking trails within easy drive distance. We know some beautiful spots in our local mountains and want to share them! SBGAL’s walks visit different neighborhoods in the “Town” of Santa Barbara or natural areas in the surrounding “Country.” SBGAL has amazed many members, including life long Santa Barbara residents, by introducing them to walking paths, paseos, hidden charms, and history of the City and surrounding  area.

Travel is the soul of SBGAL. Our GAL-pal get-a-ways serve as the ultimate reward for all  the trek training! Travel adventure destinations are chosen based on cultural or natural offerings and the time of year. Hiking adventures are typically held in National Parks, State Parks or other natural wonder destinations, such as Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce, Sedona, to name a few. Walking adventures typically focus on ½ or full marathon offerings or more urban destinations, such as San Francisco, Victoria, B.C., and Niagra Falls, Ont. SBGAL members learn during the course of the session how to research, plan and implement logistics, including lodging, social events, dinner reservations, etc., so that everyone that goes on the travel trip has a a great, worry-free, stress-free, time.

Membership

SBGAL is a member-run organization (officially, it is a nonprofit corporation) with an elected Board of Directors and seven standing committees.  All members, other than BODs and Legacy Members, participate on at least one of these committees:
  • Elections
  • Marketing
  • Hiking and Walking Committee (HAWC)
  • Hospitality
  • Adventure Travel
  • Website
  • Registrar
For new members, it is understood that your first year will be transitional -- both on the trek/trail and on a committee.  We will help you choose a committee that is a fit for you and where your obligation is not too burdensome.  Each committee operates differently, some meeting regularly, some only during certain times of the year.  Some are task-oriented and some project-oriented.
